The legacy of the FAMU Marching 100 does not end when the final football game concludes. It continues through every rehearsal, scholarship, reunion, chapter meeting, concert, mentorship opportunity, and act of service carried forward by the Marching 100 Alumni Band Association.
From Atlanta to Tallahassee, the Association sustains a national network of more than 5,000 alumni and supporters connected by a singular experience: the discipline, musicianship, precision, and fellowship of Florida A&M University’s incomparable band tradition.
The result is a living example of a true marching band legacy: one that honors the past while investing directly in the future.

A Legacy Built on Excellence and Service
The modern history of the Marching 100 Alumni Band Association is rooted in a clear purpose: to preserve the identity of the band family and strengthen the FAMU Bands for generations to come.
Founded in 2000 by Victor R. Gaines, a former trumpet player and head drum major of the Marching 100, the Association was established to support the academic needs of band students and enhance the broader FAMU Bands program. Its membership includes former musicians, dancers, participants in band programs, and devoted supporters who recognize the cultural and educational importance of the institution.
The FAMU band tradition itself reaches back to 1892, when the first band at the institution was organized with only 16 instruments. Over more than a century, that foundation developed into an ensemble of more than 250 members and earned distinguished titles such as “The Marchingest, Playingest Band in the Land” and “The Best College Marching Band in the Country.”
Since 1946, the Marching 100 legacy has represented a particularly powerful standard of musical excellence, visual precision, character, leadership, academics, musicianship, and service. Those principles remain visible in every generation of alumni.

Five Chapters, One Band Family
The Association’s local chapters provide the structure that allows alumni to remain connected beyond campus and football season. Each chapter creates a regional home for fellowship, service, communication, and support of current students.
The Local Chapters network includes Atlanta, DMV, Jacksonville, South Florida, and Tallahassee.
Atlanta: Sustaining Excellence Beyond College
The Atlanta Chapter brings together Marching 100 alumni throughout Metro Atlanta and surrounding communities. Its work reflects a central principle of the Association: the commitment to excellence does not conclude with graduation.
Atlanta alumni maintain contact through chapter communication, fellowship, service activities, and coordinated travel to FAMU events. Previous chapter efforts have included organized trips back to Tallahassee, creating opportunities for alumni to return to campus together and participate in the traditions that shaped their lives.
DMV: Connecting a Broad Alumni Corridor
The DMV Chapter serves alumni across one of the Association’s broadest geographic regions, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
That reach demonstrates the national character of the Marching 100 family. Distance does not diminish connection. Through chapter communication, regional gatherings, and shared participation in major events, alumni throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic remain linked to the band’s continuing story.
Jacksonville: A Strong Florida Connection
The Jacksonville Chapter anchors alumni engagement in Northeast Florida. The chapter provides a regional point of connection for former Marching 100 members and supporters who remain invested in FAMU, the band program, and the educational development of current students.
Jacksonville also serves as an important bridge between alumni communities throughout Florida, strengthening participation in homecoming, concerts, football classic activities, and Association initiatives.
South Florida: Fellowship, Mentorship, and Outreach
The South Florida Chapter serves alumni and supporters in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. Approved by the National Board on May 18, 2011, with 47 charter members, the chapter has established a strong record of organized fellowship and community engagement.
Regular meetings, alumni picnics, rehearsals, receptions for graduating high school seniors, and other gatherings create consistent opportunities for connection. The chapter has also pursued mentorship initiatives designed to help students and prospective students understand the opportunities associated with FAMU and the Marching 100 tradition.
Tallahassee: The Home Base of Year-Round Service
The Tallahassee Chapter serves the capital region, South Georgia, and Alabama. As the chapter closest to the university, it functions as an essential “boots on the ground” presence for the FAMU Bands.
Its role extends beyond alumni fellowship. Tallahassee members support direct engagement with current students, assist with band-related needs, and collaborate with the Marching 100 Alumni Band Association and the FAMU National Alumni Association. The chapter also welcomes supporters who did not march but remain committed to preserving the band’s legacy.
Together, these five chapters create a national framework with local strength. Each region reflects the character of its community while remaining accountable to the same traditions of brotherhood, sisterhood, discipline, and service.
Connection Continues Through Signature Events
The Association’s calendar is designed to keep alumni engaged throughout the year. These events are not simply social occasions. They are institutional touchpoints where history, performance, mentorship, and service intersect.
The Annual Jazz Concert
The annual Jazz Concert celebrates the breadth of the FAMU musical tradition. While the Marching 100 is internationally recognized for its field performance and precision marching, the larger FAMU Bands family also includes symphonic, wind ensemble, and jazz programs.
The Jazz Concert provides a setting for alumni and supporters to honor that complete musical legacy. It brings the community together through performance while reinforcing the Association’s commitment to supporting the full educational and artistic development of FAMU band students.
Homecoming: A Return to the Field
Homecoming remains one of the most powerful expressions of Marching 100 fellowship. Alumni return to Tallahassee not merely as spectators, but as active participants in a tradition they helped build.
Homecoming activities may include:
- Marching in the homecoming parade
- Playing with the band in the stands
- Participating in pre-game and halftime performances
- Attending rehearsals and alumni meetings
- Reconnecting through hospitality suites and chapter gatherings
For many alumni, the return to Bragg Memorial Stadium is an emotional and ceremonial experience. The field becomes a meeting place for generations: former section leaders, drum majors, musicians, dancers, directors, and supporters standing together under the same standard of excellence.
Football Classics and Alumni Gatherings
Atlanta Football Classic events, the Florida Classic, alumni hospitality activities, tailgates, and regional gatherings provide additional opportunities for former band members to reconnect.
These occasions often reunite individuals who have not seen or communicated with one another for years. A shared uniform, musical phrase, rehearsal memory, or section tradition can restore a connection immediately. The enduring brotherhood and sisterhood of the Marching 100 is strengthened through these repeated encounters.
Membership Turns Pride Into Progress
Membership in the Marching 100 Alumni Band Association provides a direct way for alumni and supporters to remain connected while contributing to current students.
Membership supports the Association’s ability to communicate with alumni, coordinate programs, sustain local chapters, and fund initiatives that benefit the FAMU Bands. It transforms pride in the past into tangible investment in the future.
The Association has awarded thousands of dollars through band camp scholarships, academic scholarships, book vouchers, and other student-support initiatives. Its scholarship program has recognized achievement in multiple areas, including leadership, musicianship, percussion performance, jazz studies, academic excellence, and exceptional service to the band.

Support may begin during summer band camp, when alumni engage with staff, officers, and student leaders and participate in camp activities. It continues through the academic year as students receive financial assistance and encouragement. It becomes especially visible during homecoming, when current and former members share the field and the stands.
The connection is therefore reciprocal. Alumni preserve the tradition, while current students extend it. Each generation inherits the responsibility to uphold the character, academics, leadership, musicianship, marching precision, and service that define the Marching 100.
